Tune-Up and Spark Plugs done right, by people who know imports
A modern tune-up is not the old set of points and a carb. These days it means spark plugs, ignition coils, filters and clean air passages. On direct injection engines, it can also mean cleaning carbon off the valves.
Does it idle rough at a stop light, or pick up slow on Lexington Road? Call 706-353-3880.
BMW and Mini direct injection engines pack carbon on the intake valves. They need cleaning around 60,000 to 80,000 miles. Audi and VW 2.0 turbo engines do the same, and they eat ignition coils too. Mercedes-Benz V6 and V8 engines call for plugs around 60,000 miles. Honda and Toyota use long life plugs that go about 100,000 miles. Subaru plugs sit close to the frame, so they are hard to reach. Porsche 944 engines still need a distributor cap and rotor. Athens Import Auto Repair does them all in Athens, GA.
Signs your import needs a tune-up
- The engine shakes or stumbles at idle.
- The car feels slow, especially when you climb a hill.
- You are getting fewer miles per tank.
- The engine is hard to start on cold mornings.
- The check engine light shows a misfire code.
- The plugs are past the miles your brand lists.
What our tune-up includes
Spark plugs
Plugs make the spark that burns the fuel. We use the exact plug your engine calls for, and we gap it right.
Ignition coils
Coils turn battery power into spark, and weak coils cause misfires. We test them and replace the bad ones.
Air and cabin filters
A clogged air filter starves the engine, and a clogged cabin filter makes the AC weak. We replace both.
Throttle body cleaning
The throttle body controls how much air enters the engine. Carbon builds up there and causes a rough idle, so we clean it.
Intake valve carbon cleaning
Direct injection engines build carbon on the intake valves. We clean it off so the engine breathes again.
Fuel system cleaning
Dirty injectors spray poorly, so we clean them to restore a smooth idle and better mileage.
How a tune-up works
Tell us the miles and the feel
We look up how often your engine needs new plugs.
We test and inspect
We scan for misfires, check the coils and look at the filters.
You approve the list
We explain which plugs, coils, filters or cleaning are due, and which are not.
We tune and drive it
We do the work and drive the car. It should idle smooth and pull strong.

Why drivers trust us with tune-up and spark plugs
The right plug matters
Imports use specific plugs and gaps, and the wrong plug can cause misfires or damage a coil.
We know direct injection
BMW, Audi, VW and Mini direct injection engines need carbon cleaning, and we do it the right way.
No fake tune-ups
We only replace what is due, so if your coils test fine, they stay.

Scott, J., customerTune-Up and Spark Plugs FAQ
Do you do tune-up and spark plug service for imports in Athens, GA?
Yes, we do. Athens Import Auto Repair does plugs, coils, filters and carbon cleaning on imports only. That includes BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, VW, Mini, Honda, Toyota and Subaru. Call 706-353-3880.
How often should I change the spark plugs in my BMW?
Most BMW engines call for new plugs every 60,000 miles, and turbo engines may need them sooner. Old plugs strain the coils and cause misfires.
What is carbon buildup on a direct injection engine?
Direct injection sprays fuel right into the cylinder, so fuel never washes the intake valves. Carbon from the oil vapor sticks to them, and the engine idles rough and loses power. We clean the valves to fix it.
Why does my Audi keep blowing ignition coils?
Audi and VW 2.0 turbo coils run hot and fail over time. Old spark plugs make it worse, because the coil works harder to jump the gap. That is why we replace the plugs along with the coils.
Is a tune-up the same as a service?
No, it is not. A service covers oil, fluids and inspection. A tune-up focuses on the ignition and air side, like plugs, coils and filters. Many owners do both at the same visit.
Will a tune-up fix my rough idle?
Often, yes. A rough idle usually comes from worn plugs or a weak coil. A dirty throttle body or carbon on the valves can cause it too. So we test first, and that way we fix the right thing.
