Models we see most
Common Mazda problems we fix
Purge valve failure
The purge valve lets fuel vapor from the tank into the engine. On many Mazda models it sticks open. The engine idles rough and the check engine light comes on. We replace the valve.
Rust on older models
Older Mazda3 and Mazda6 models rust in the rear wheel arches and rocker panels. The metal was not sealed well. We point out any rust we see so you can stay ahead of it.
Water pump on some four cylinders
The water pump on some Mazda four cylinders leaks or seizes. The 2.3 and 2.5 are the ones we see most. A squeal or a coolant drip is the sign. We replace it and the belt.
Thin rotors
Mazda brakes are sized for a light car. Rotors wear thin and warp. A shake when you stop means new rotors. We use parts that match the car.
Ignition coil misfires
Ignition coils on the older Mazda3 and Mazda6 fail. The engine misfires and shakes. We replace the coil and the plugs.
Timing actuator rattle on the 2.3
The variable valve timing actuator on the 2.3 engine rattles at cold start. It sits on the end of the camshaft. Worn parts let the chain slap. We replace the actuator and the chain.

Carpenter, K., customerMazda repair FAQ
Do you work on Mazda in Athens?
Yes. Athens Import Auto Repair works on Mazda cars and SUVs in Athens, GA. Mazda3, Mazda6, CX-5, CX-9, CX-30 and Miata are all welcome. We have serviced Mazda since 1991.
Why is my Mazda check engine light on?
A stuck purge valve is one of the top causes on a Mazda. It lets fuel vapor into the engine at the wrong time. A bad coil or oxygen sensor comes next. We read the code and test the part.
Do you work on the Mazda Miata?
Yes. We work on every Miata from 1990 to today. Timing belts on the old ones, brakes and suspension on all of them. Bring it by.
Why is my Mazda rusting?
Older Mazda3 and Mazda6 models had thin paint in the wheel arches. Road grime sits there and rust starts. Wash the arches often. We can show you where to look.
Why does my Mazda squeal at startup?
A squeal at startup is often a worn belt or a failing water pump bearing. We check both. A water pump that is starting to seize needs to come out soon.
Do you service the Mazda CX-5?
Yes. The CX-5 is a strong SUV and we see many of them. Oil service, brakes, purge valves and all wheel drive fluid are common jobs. We handle them all.
