What the timing chain does
The timing chain is a metal chain inside the engine. It links the crankshaft at the bottom to the camshafts at the top. The camshafts open and close the valves. The chain keeps the valves moving in time with the pistons.
A tensioner keeps the chain tight. Plastic guides keep it on track. Engine oil keeps all of it cool and quiet. When any of these wear, the chain gets loose. A loose chain rattles.
What the rattle sounds like
Most owners hear it first on a cold start. It sounds like a handful of marbles in a can. Or like a chain slapping on metal. It lasts a few seconds and then fades as oil pressure builds.
Over time the rattle lasts longer. You may hear it at idle too. The engine may run rough or idle poorly. A check engine light with a timing code may come on. These are all signs to act now.

Why BMW and Mini engines do this
Some BMW and Mini engines from the late 2000s and 2010s are known for this. The plastic guides get brittle with age and heat. The tensioner gets weak. The chain itself stretches a little with miles.
Low oil makes it much worse. So do long oil change intervals. Dirty oil wears the chain and guides faster. If your BMW or Mini uses oil, check it often. Keep it full with the right spec.
What happens if you ignore it
A stretched chain can jump a tooth on the sprocket. Then the valves open at the wrong time. The pistons hit the valves. That bends the valves and can damage the pistons and head.
At that point the fix is not a chain. It is a replacement engine. The rattle is your warning. Listen to it.
A Mini Cooper S Clubman at our shop
